Why its good to eat Organic

By Rich McCoy

There is much chatter as to the benefits of an organic diet this is a growing list of a few:

Organic produce doesn’t harm those growing it

Non-organic farm workers have unusually high rates of cancer, due to there exposure to herbicides, fungicides and  insecticides these are believed to be carcinogenic.

None of these chemicals are used in organic farming.

Organic food has more of the good stuff in it

A study done by the Journal of American Nutrition revealed that organic food contains from 10-250% more vitamins and minerals than non-organic food.

There are no GMO’s in Organic food

By default organic certification standards do not allow the use of genetically modified organisms.

Organic food tastes better.

Although difficult to prove scientifically it is hard to refute the evidence of experience, just taste an organic and an non organic apple in the same sitting and you will soon notice the difference. This may be because the Organic apple has probably reached you sooner after being picked because the non-organic can be left longer due to its chemical coat protecting it from going off, either way the taste of organic produce much much fresher then its non-organic distant cousin.

Organic farming works with nature not against it

As a result in Organic farming not using pesticides and herbicides killing off all manners of wee friendly besties the Britain’s Soil Association reported that organic farms have five times as many wild plants with as non-organic farms.

Organic farming is better for the soil

Non-organic farming techniques focus on chemical-intensive, mono-crop methods which have led to ever-increasing topsoil erosion. Organic farming techniques help to build soil on an ongoing basis thereby preventing topsoil erosion and organic soil contains up to twice as many beneficial microbes, earthworms and insects as non-organic soil.

Organic farming is better for the climate

Organic soil contains up to twice as many carbon storing microbes, earthworms and insects as non-organic soil storing up to 33% more carbon.
